Tucked away in the far North West corner of Corfu, just below San Stefanos, is the resort of Arillas. Arillas has to be one of the best places to stay in Corfu because of its fine west facing beach, fantastic sunsets, warm water, cliff-top walks with views of San Stefanos, its fabulous restaurants and cosy, friendly atmosphere. In the past Arillas was adopted as the resort of choice by hippies, and this resulted, 25 years ago, in the creation of two, now well established, alternative arts and meditation centres, the Ouranus-Club and the Alexis-Zorba Centre. Get to know some of the people on the north beach and you may be lucky enough to get invited to one of the Ouranus-Club's discos, where you will be able to dance the night away to some of the finest new edge music, from all over the world. More recently a new Centre dedicated to the practice of meditation and self exploration has opened in Magoulades, about 4km from Arillas, further adding to the alternative options available to visitors to this part of Corfu. The Corfu Buddhahall is a truly beautiful architectural creation with a 360° vista across some of the most spectacular landscapes in this region.
Arillas is a very special kind of resort where it is easy to make new friends, so is a recommended destination for solo travelers. If you have not been absorbed into a group of fellow solos, and shared an evening meal at one of its fine restaurants, within days of arrival, I would be surprised. Arillas is definitely the place for making new friends.
